Maple Bacon Buttermilk Scones

Maple Bacon Buttermilk Scones

Maple and bacon is truly one of the best flavor combinations ever to be created by mankind. And of course, naturally, I had to add these two drool worthy combos with scones and bake the most pleasant treats of all. I toyed with a couple of recipes before I created my own to see how they all differed from each other and I came out with something tasty and quite delicious, if I may say so myself. A simple scone recipe that everyone can follow and that everyone will love!

Here are the ingredients:

  • 3 cups of unbleached all purpose flour or measure to measure gluten free flour mix

  • 1 tablespoon baking powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  • 3 tablespoons maple syrup

  • 8 tablespoons cold, unsalted butter; cut into small cubes

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 cup of buttermilk

  • 1 cup of diced bacon; cut into ¼ to ½ bits

Topping

  • 1 tablespoon milk or heavy cream

  • 2 tablespoons coarse or regular sugar

How to make:

  1. In a medium-sized bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.

  2. Add the butter, working it in till the mixture is crumbly.

  3. Whisk together the egg, milk, and maple flavor. Add this to the dry ingredients, along with the bacon or ham. Mix just till everything is evenly moistened.

  4. Transfer the dough to a piece of parchment or a lightly floured work surface. Pat and roll into a disc shape about 1/2in thick.

  5. Cut the dough into 8 triangular wedges.

  6. Place the scones on a lightly greased or parchment-lined baking sheet, and put them in the freezer for 30 minutes. While the scones are chilling, preheat your oven to 425°F.

  7. Brush the chilled scones with milk or cream, and sprinkle with additional maple sugar.

  8. Bake the chilled scones for 18 to 20 minutes, or until they're a medium- to deep-golden brown.

  9. Yield: 8 scones

This is a recipe that I followed from King Arthur’s website and I decided to add buttermilk to create a little moisture so it wouldn’t be so dry.

I may get a little daring and add another ingredient to this recipe just to “spice” things up a bit. I’ll probably come up with something closer to the holiday season, until then enjoy these seasonal and all year round scones! Let me know how you like the recipe and if you would do anything different to it!

Happy October!
